Dear parents,

We are now half-way through Term 2. Below you will find the projects that your child has created and the concepts learned with Coding Kids. We will also be sending an end-of-term update.  Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Week 1 & 2 – Just Jump

Touch the player sprite to make them jump. The enemy sprite continues to move across the screen. Avoid the enemy sprite by jumping over it.

Code What we learned
Player sprite

  • Trigger code by touching our player sprite
  • Program sprite to jump, i.e. move up and down
  • Using XY coordinates
  • We change the Y coordinates to get the sprite to move up and down
Enemy sprite

  • Automate the enemy sprite
  • Program the sprite to move forever by using a forever loop
  • We move the sprite left and right by changing the X coordinates.
  • We keep score by storing the number in a variable. A variable is like a box, that stores a number. We can change this number.
  • We end the game when the enemy sprite touches the player sprite.

Week 3 & 4 – Catch the creatures

Touch the collectible sprite but avoid the enemy sprite. You earn 1 point every time you touch the collectible sprite. You lose 5 points every time you touch the enemy sprite.

Code What we learned
Collectible sprite

  • Using variables to keep score
  • Changing the value stored by variables
  • XY coordinates
  • Random number generation
  • Timing device
Enemy sprite

  • Using negative numbers to reduce the score
