Join us these July school holidays from Monday 2 – Friday 13 July 2018

Build something awesome these school holidays!

Coding Kids is running Holiday Hackafun code camp again this coming April school holidays, from Monday 2 – Friday 13 July 2018. We will be at five venues across Brisbane and Ipswich:

  • Yeronga State School
  • Bulimba State School
  • Hendra State School
  • Middle Park State School
  • Ipswich Junior Grammar School

Students aged 7 to 15 years old are invited to our holiday code camp program.

Our full-day program is from 9am to 4.30pm, however we provide supervision from 7am up until 6pm, which is convenient for working parents. The full-day program is broken into four sessions, broken up by morning tea break, lunch and afternoon tea break:

  • morning class (9.30-10.45am)
  • midday class (11.15am – 12.45pm)
  • afternoon class (1.45-3.15pm)
  • extension time (3.45-4.30pm)

Each session offers two options: one for younger students (7-11 years old) and one for older students (10-15 years old). See here for the daily schedule

Morning classes

We run the morning class as one large group. Together we explore unplugged computational thinking activities and engineering projects.

Some of the computational thinking activities we cover are:

  • Binary numbers
  • Command games e.g. Naughts and crosses
  • Sorting numbers
  • Boolean guessing game
  • Encryption

We also experiment with some engineering projects:

  • Marshmallow tower challenge
  • Paddle pop stick bridge challenge

Midday classes

Let get coding! In the midday class, students can choose from two options offered. Across the two weeks of school holidays, these many topics are covered in the midday class:

  • Visual programming with Scratch: build computer games, animations or digital artwork, e.g. Pacman, AI friend, Pong, and Dragon Castle. (7-11 year olds)
  • Programming with Python: build computer games, animations or explore maths and geometry, e.g. spirography Turtle, Text Adventure, and Space Quiz. (10-15 year olds)
  • 3D modelling and printing: create 3D designs using Tinkercad and then get them 3D printed. (7-11 year olds)
  • Programming Ozobot robots: program robots to solve challenges, e.g. Fenced in, maze challenge, and more. (7-11 year olds)

Afternoon classes

Let’s explore! Choose from our various afternoon activity options: electronics, coding art, graphic design, inventing musical instruments, robotics and much more. We offer two options per day, however over the course of the two-week holiday we cover the many topics below:

  • program Micro:bit (tiny, programmable computers) with Python, e.g. Roly Poly, and Emoji Sim. (10-15 year olds)
  • Makey Makey: build circuits using lollies, fruit and aluminium foil and create musical instruments and game controllers, e.g. fruit drum kit and a lolly game controller. (7-11 year olds)
  • Kano Make Art: coding for graphics and artwork, e.g. draw a scenery of a grass, trees, sky and clouds using coffeeScript. (10-15 year olds)
  • Canva: graphic design and branding activities, e.g. redesign the Coding Kids logo. (7-15 year olds)
  • Ozobot robots: program robots to complete challenges (7-11 year olds)

Extension time

Extend and Grow! Kids will have the option to work on an existing project or create a new project from various subjects.

  • visual programming with Scratch: build computer games, animations and interactive digital artwork (7-11 year olds)
  • programming with Python: build computer games, animations, and explore maths and geometry  (10-15 year olds)
  • 3D modelling: create 3D designs (7-11 year olds)
  • programming Ozobot robots: program robots to solve challenges (7-11 year olds)
  • program Micro:bit (tiny, programmable computers) with Python, create games and control the LED grid  (10-15 year olds)
  • Makey Makey: build circuits using lollies, fruit and aluminium foil and create musical instruments and game controllers (7-11 year olds)
  • Kano Make Art: coding for graphics and artwork using CoffeeScript, a simple text based programming language  (10-15 year olds)
  • Canva: graphic design and branding activities  (7-15 year olds)

During supervision time, 7:00-9:00am and 4.30-6.00pm, students can choose their own activity with guidance from our Coding Mentors.

Scratch, Makey Makey and Ozobot robots are great tools for visual programming activities for primary school students. They are a fun and easy way for young students to learn the fundamentals of coding and computational thinking.

What is Python? Python is a high-level, general-purpose computer programming language. It has been used in many popular applications: YouTube, DropBox, Google, Quora, Instagram, BitTorrent, Spotify, and Reddit.

Why do we teach Python? There are so many programming languages, so why Python? Python is now often used as part of the high school Digital Technologies subject and is often a first year university subject in Bachelor of IT degrees. Python has simple syntax, is highly readable and useful for any beginner project. It is quick to learn and allows you move on from block coding to a text-based programming language to build fun, creative projects.
