St Mary’s Catholic College, Kingaroy, Queensland: Engaging Science Grant winner

Welcome – Coding Kids in Kingaroy – to deliver coding workshops to students, teachers and librarians. Firstly, we are visiting the following schools:

  1. St Mary’s Catholic College, Kingaroy on Tuesday 8 August, 2017
  2. St Patrick’s Primary School, Nanango on Wednesday 9 August 2017
  3. Kingaroy State High School, Kingaroy on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 August 2017

Our team of three: one educator (Emily), one programmer (Red) and a mechatronics engineer (Elnaz) (I know, it sounds like a joke, “one educator, one programmer and a mechatronics engineer walk into a bar”) are working with the Kingaroy and Nanango communities to give access to local students to coding, game design, and graphic animation design workshops.

Next, we’re building fun animation and computer game projects with students and teaching teachers to build coding projects that are integrated with traditional school subjects. Projects we’re building with the students include:

Scratch projects

  • Dance Party Animation for Years 3-4
  • Forest of Danger for Years 5-6
  • Solar System quiz game for Year 5-6 teachers

These are fun, easy projects to learn to code really quickly. It’s very accessible to understand the fundamentals when using coding blocks.

Python projects

  • Magic 8 Ball Game for Year 10 STEM students
  • Geometry Turtle for Year 10 ICT students
  • Both projects for high school teachers

These projects are a really interesting and entertaining way to learn to code using a text based language. Python is a great language to learn because it’s pretty close to English, you can almost read the code like you’re reading English.

Finally, if you are interested in bringing Coding Kids to your community, email us here and we can work with you to apply for a grant to make this happen. Just like Coding Kids in Kingaroy.
