Fun Palace is a free annual and worldwide celebration of art and science. Every year, it takes place over the first weekend in October. In Queensland, the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) — as well as other council libraries around the state — will be running Fun Palace events on 7-8 October. This year, SLQ will be transformed into a dedicated wonderland of scientific inquiry and creativity, as art and science collide and enjoy Coding at Fun Palace Brisbane. Everyone is an artist and scientist.

Activities

Last year, there were activities centred around Indigenous art, learning how to code, making circuits, and binding books. There were also science shows and engineering activities with Engibear. We delivered some workshops of our own, which you can read all about in this article here.

This year’s events at SLQ’s Fun Palace will be featuring talks by Dr Karl, as well as activities centred around painting, dancing, coding, circuitry, Indigenous culture and language, engineering with Engibear, and much more. You can read about this year’s events in more detail here.

Will Coding Kids be there?

Yes! Coding Kids will be presenting an installation on how to build a computer game using Scratch in the main thoroughfare. Come along and visit us to learn about the inner workings of code and software programs. Feel free to ask our friendly Coding Mentors any questions you may have about coding and computer game design!

Coding Kids will also be delivering free workshops at the Level 1 Computer Training Room. You’ll find it in the SLQ building; the entrance to the training room is near the Stanley Place bus stops.

Our one-hour workshops will start at the following times:

  • 10am
  • 11.30am
  • 12.30pm

Make sure to turn up at least 10 minutes beforehand to sign up and secure your spot, as there will be limited spaces available on the day. You can learn to code and build your first computer game!

What should I expect at Coding at Fun Palace Brisbane? Do I need to bring anything?

There’s no need to bring anything — just yourselves!

What will we make?

You will be making an artistic computer game, so be sure to bring your imagination and creativity along with you!

What’s the signup process?

When you arrive, parents will be required to sign their children in for the one-hour workshop. Please sign out when you leave, as this helps us to know who we are supervising for our workshops!
